Two friends split a $5 correspondence course in ice cream making and opened in a converted petrol station in Burlington with $12,000 between them. Cohen has almost no sense of smell, so he built the product around texture instead, the oversized chunks that became the company's whole identity. Unilever bought it in 2000, and the Waterbury factory is one of the most visited places in Vermont, with a hillside graveyard of headstones for discontinued flavours.
