Bear Mountain and the park that stopped a prison

The state had begun building a prison here when Mary Harriman offered ten thousand acres and a million dollars to stop it and make a park instead. The first section of the Appalachian Trail ever cleared runs through it, and the trailside zoo sits at the lowest point on the whole trail.
