Bruce Ratner bought the New Jersey Nets in 2004 to anchor a development over the Vanderbilt rail yards, then spent eight years in court against neighbours who objected to the state condemning occupied blocks for a private arena. Frank Gehry's design was dropped for a cheaper SHoP scheme in weathered steel. The arena opened in September 2012 with a run of Jay-Z concerts, and Brooklyn had a major league team again for the first time since 1957.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
