Raised in the Fifth Ward and taught to speak by a Baptist preacher father, she became the first Black woman elected to Congress from the South. Her Watergate impeachment statement, that her faith in the Constitution was whole, and she was not going to sit and be an idle spectator, is among the best-known speeches of the century.
