Atalaya, a Moorish house on the dunes
1933
Huntington Beach State Park, South Carolina
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
Huntington sketched a Spanish coastal watchtower in the sand and had local labour build it through the Depression with no blueprints, working from his corrections as they went. It is a hollow square around a courtyard with a forty-foot tower, and Anna's studio wing has a skylight and stalls for the animals she sculpted from life. They stopped coming after 1947 and it has been left unfurnished.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
