Giuseppe Sammut, a Maltese immigrant, bought an old stable on Huntington Avenue in 1916 and opened it as a pool parlour. The house account of the name is that a customer asked how he would settle up if he lost a big bet and he said he would pay in artichoke leaves. The sign changed to Artichoke Joe's in 1921, and the founder's grandson has run the place since 1975, which makes it one of the oldest card rooms in California and one of the very few still held by the family that started it.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
