Archbishop Rummel High School, named for the man who excommunicated segregationists
1962
Metairie, Louisiana
Joseph Rummel announced on 27 March 1962 that the Catholic schools of the New Orleans archdiocese would integrate, and when three prominent opponents kept campaigning against him he excommunicated all three on 16 April. The 1962 to 1963 term was the first integrated school year in the archdiocese's history. This boys' school opened in Metairie that same year, one of four new secondary schools Rummel founded in Jefferson Parish, and it carries his name.
