Apollo 1, the fire on the pad
1967
Launch Complex 34, Cape Canaveral, Florida
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
Gus Grissom, Ed White and Roger Chaffee died here in January 1967 when fire swept their capsule during a routine test on the pad, three weeks before they were to fly. The launch complex was never used again. Its concrete stands are left standing on purpose, stencilled ABANDON IN PLACE, with two granite benches facing them. Everything that reached the Moon was redesigned because of what happened on this spot.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
