A Convair 240 on approach to Newark drifted off course on January 22, 1952 and came down on a house in Elizabeth, killing everyone aboard and people on the ground. Robert Patterson, secretary of war under Truman, was among the dead. It was the second of three airliners to fall on the city in two months, and after the third the Port Authority shut Newark Airport for nine months and rebuilt its approaches.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
