Burrus Mill and Elevator in Saginaw needed a way to sell Light Crust Flour, so in 1931 its president W. Lee O'Daniel put a string band on the radio and named it after the product. The line-up included Bob Wills and Milton Brown, who both left to build Western swing on their own terms. O'Daniel used the show's audience to run for governor, won in 1938, and went on to the United States Senate.
