Glen Island Casino, where the swing bands were made
1932
New Rochelle, New York
A summer season at the Glen Island Casino, on the Long Island Sound shore of New Rochelle, was the booking that turned a young band into a name. Ozzie Nelson packed the hall in 1932 and the Casa Loma Orchestra followed the next summer, and after them came the Dorsey Brothers, Charlie Barnet, Claude Thornhill, Les Brown and Glenn Miller. Westchester County owns the island and runs it as a park, and the old casino trades on as a catering hall.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
