50th and France, the shopping street that came before Southdale
1934
Edina, Minnesota
West 50th Street at France Avenue was a short row of local shops in the 1920s. The Edina Theatre opened on the corner on August 31, 1934, an art deco house by Liebenberg and Kaplan seating 1,300 and the largest cinema in suburban Minneapolis when it opened. The district kept filling in through the postwar suburb rush and is still a walkable street of roughly 175 shops and offices, a couple of miles north of the enclosed mall that changed how America shopped.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
