Turn 4, where Dale Earnhardt died
2001
Turn 4, Daytona International Speedway, Daytona Beach, Florida
The final lap of the 2001 Daytona 500, running third behind the two cars he owned, the Intimidator touched Sterling Marlin, was hit by Ken Schrader, and went into this turn-four wall head-on at about 160 miles an hour. The basilar skull fracture killed him instantly. NASCAR's modern safety era, mandatory head-and-neck restraints, energy-absorbing walls, a safer car, was built on this corner.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
