The Asian carp electrofishing
2019
Below Barkley Dam, Cumberland River, Kentucky
The tailwater below Barkley Dam, where the Cumberland River comes out of the lock and the powerhouse. Kentucky wildlife officers run electrofishing boats through here, trailing electrodes that put a current into the water and bring whatever is underneath up to the surface. What comes up in this stretch is silver carp, in numbers that turn the river white: the current makes them jump, so a boat idling across a school sets off a few hundred fish at once. The footage was shot by Kentucky Afield on a media day in 2019 for the acoustic fish fence being fitted into the Barkley lock chamber, which is meant to stop the carp using the lock to move further up the Cumberland. The boat comes back loaded to the gunwales. Nothing about the day was unusual by the agency own account, which is the part people struggle with.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
