Me at the zoo
San Diego Zoo, San Diego, California
Robin Brown · Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
The first video ever uploaded to YouTube was nineteen seconds shot at this zoo: co-founder Jawed Karim in front of two elephants, his high school friend Yakov Lapitsky holding the camera, posted on April 23, 2005. Karim observes that the cool thing about these guys is that they have really long trunks. It has since passed 400 million views, and in February 2026 the Victoria and Albert Museum acquired it along with a rebuilt 2006 YouTube watch page, which makes a home video about elephant trunks a museum object. The elephants are no longer here: the enclosure he filmed in front of was Elephant Mesa, and after the zoo moved its elephants to Elephant Odyssey in 2009 the ground was rebuilt as Urban Jungle. Stand on the spot today and the animals behind the rail are giraffes.
