The photograph was a prank that misfired twice. Kyle Craven reddened his face with a sweater, put on the widest smile he could manage and sat for his Archbishop Hoban yearbook portrait in 2005. The principal made him shoot it again, but his friend Ian Davies had already scanned a copy, and in January 2012 Davies posted it to Reddit. Within weeks the face was the internet's shorthand for every small disaster that can befall a person. Craven has talked about it under his own name ever since, which is rarer than it sounds for a man whose face belongs to everybody.
