Detroit's fire-brewed beer, the Strohs ran America's third-largest brewer from Gratiot Avenue until debt from buying Schlitz sank the whole company in 1999, one of the great family-business collapses. The name survives on licensed brews. Stroh River Place keeps the family stamp on the riverfront.
