Wausau declared itself the Possum Capital of the World in the 1980s after a state bill classified opossums as game, and the town has thrown a festival in the animal's honor every summer since. A parade, a possum king and queen contest, and a fun run fill the small Panhandle town for a weekend. (Held the last weekend of July; 2027 dates approximate.)
