One of the largest St. Patrick's Day parades in the country by attendance relative to population steps off through downtown Scranton on the Saturday before the holiday, drawing hundreds of thousands to a city of about 75,000. The parade has run since the early 1960s and is followed by an all day street celebration known locally as Parade Day. Area schools and colleges close for the occasion.
