An 800-acre camping festival at Sunshine Grove has brought major touring acts to rural Okeechobee County every March since 2016. Produced by the promoters behind Bonnaroo, it draws tens of thousands for multiple stages, art installations, and overnight camping. Zora Neale Hurston, who chronicled Black Florida in her writing, spent her last years here writing for the local paper, and was buried in an unmarked grave until Alice Walker came looking in 1973 and put up a stone reading 'A Genius of the South.' The town now keeps a trail of her places, ending at the Garden of Heavenly Rest..
