The Northwestern Michigan Fair brings a week of 4-H livestock judging, a carnival, and nightly grandstand shows to its Blair Township fairgrounds south of Traverse City. Founded in 1908 as the Grand Traverse Region Fair Association, it is a separate event from the city's cherry festival and has run from its current grounds since 1975.
The history within reach
The Northern Michigan Asylum opened in 1885 on the Kirkbride plan under a superintendent who banned straitjackets and prescribed flowers, work and beauty, and its Victorian-Italianate wards ran for over a century.
