The Lee County Tobacco Festival parades down Main Street in Pennington Gap each fall, celebrating the county's tobacco farming heritage with a beauty pageant, vendors, and floats. Established in 1949, it is Lee County's oldest annual parade and the longest running tobacco festival in Virginia. It is traditionally held on the fourth Saturday of October, though the town had not posted an exact 2026 date at verification time.

Coal operators here ran the county outright, hiring deputies, evicting strikers and shooting organisers, and it took until the 1970s to finish the fight.
John Fox Jr wrote a coal-boom romance here in 1908 that sold a million copies, became one of the first films shot in Technicolor, and left the mountains with a stereotype they have been arguing with ever since.
