Syracuse existed because of salt, brine springs beside Onondaga Lake supplied most of the country's salt for decades, and the canal was routed through to carry it.
The Onondaga are the firekeepers of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy, whose Great Law bound five nations under a council that met near this lake.
Tubman bought land here from William Seward, brought her parents north to it, and spent her last fifty years running a home for elderly Black people on the property.
