Tempe's German-style beer festival began in the early 1970s as a small Sister Cities fundraiser called Way Out West Oktoberfest. It now fills Tempe Beach Park for a weekend of German beer, food and live music, drawing thousands of visitors and over a thousand volunteers to run it.
