Curtis Springer, a radio preacher with no medical training, invented the name in 1944 so it would be the last word in the English language, then built a mineral springs resort on federal land he never owned: a hotel, a church, a fake lake, a 60-foot cross, and cures sold by mail. The government finally evicted him in 1974. The buildings are now a Cal State desert research station, and the road sign off Interstate 15 is the most photographed thing on the drive to Las Vegas.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
