Zora Neale Hurston's Eatonville
1937
Eatonville, Florida
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
She trained as an anthropologist under Boas, collected folklore across the South and Haiti, and wrote Their Eyes Were Watching God in seven weeks. She died in a welfare home in 1960 and was buried unmarked. Alice Walker found the grave in 1973 and put a stone on it.
