Wyoming gives women the vote
1869
Cheyenne, Wyoming
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
The territorial legislature enfranchised women fifty-one years before the federal amendment, partly on principle and partly to attract settlers to a place with six men for every woman. Congress later demanded Wyoming drop it as the price of statehood. The legislature replied it would stay out of the Union a hundred years first.
