Leclerc, a Canadian alpinist known for soloing hard routes without telling anyone he was going, and Ryan Johnson of Alaska climbed a new line on the north face of the Main Tower in early March 2018. They sent word that they were over the top and starting down. Neither was heard from again. Searchers found ropes and avalanche debris on the descent route below the col. The bodies were never recovered. He was 25. The documentary The Alpinist was already being filmed about him and became, in part, about this.
