Westinghouse Lamp Plant refines uranium for the first chain reaction
1942
Bloomfield, New Jersey
Westinghouse made light bulbs in Bloomfield, work that turns on handling awkward metals cleanly at high temperature. That skill pulled the plant into the earliest phase of the Manhattan Project, supplying uranium metal for Chicago Pile-1, the reactor under the Chicago stands that produced the first self sustaining nuclear chain reaction in December 1942. The lamp business carried on next door to it.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
