Waukesha, the Saratoga of the West

A man with diabetes drank from a spring here in 1868, decided it had cured him, and told everyone. Within twenty years Waukesha was a resort town of grand hotels full of people who had come to drink the water, and it called itself the Saratoga of the West. Somebody later tried to lay pipe all the way to Chicago to sell it there and ran out of money partway. The springs were eventually polluted or pumped dry, and the city spent the 2010s in a long fight to be allowed to take Lake Michigan water instead.
