Walter Anderson rides out the hurricane
1965
Ocean Springs, Mississippi
Anderson rowed a skiff twelve miles to a barrier island to be there when Hurricane Betsy arrived, tied himself to a tree and drew it. He spent years alone on those islands drawing pelicans and grass and lived in a cottage nobody was allowed to enter. After he died in 1965 his family opened the locked room and found the walls covered floor to ceiling in a mural of the Gulf morning.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
