Alder Gulch produced perhaps $90 million in gold in three years. With no courts, a vigilance committee hanged over twenty men including the elected sheriff, who they said led the road agents robbing the stages. The town emptied and was bought in the 1940s by a couple who preserved it as it stood.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
