Rudy Van Gelder was a working optometrist who recorded jazz in his parents' Hackensack living room through the 1950s, and in July 1959 he moved into this purpose built room with laminated arches carrying a ceiling thirty nine feet up. Blue Note, Prestige, Impulse, Verve and CTI all cut here. A Love Supreme was recorded in this room in December 1964. The engineering is a large part of what people mean by the sound of postwar jazz, and the studio is still working.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
