Frederick Van Cortlandt started this fieldstone Georgian house in 1748 and it was finished the next year, which makes it the oldest building standing in the borough. Washington used it as a temporary headquarters in 1776 and again in late 1783 as he came back into the city. With British occupation looming, the family hid New York's public records in the burial vault on the hill behind the house. It has been open as a museum since 1897.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
