Union Square is named for the army that mustered there

The square took its name during the Civil War, when it served as a recruiting and mustering ground for the Union Army. A plaque at the southwestern corner marks the spot, between Somerville Avenue and Washington Street. The neighbourhood around it is now the commercial centre of southeastern Somerville.
