Tower Rock, the island that appears in droughts
1871
Wittenberg, Perry County, Missouri
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
A limestone knob standing in the Mississippi that boatmen feared for the current around it, and that Ulysses Grant kept out of private hands by executive order in 1871 as a navigation landmark. In a hard drought the river drops far enough that people walk out to it across the riverbed, which happened in 2022 and drew crowds down the levee road.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
