Towash, the town under Lake Whitney
Lake Whitney, Hill County, Texas
Towash grew up on Towash Creek by the Brazos, about fifteen miles west of Hillsboro, on ground where a band of Ioni people had lived under a leader of that name until Anglo settlers arrived in numbers around 1850. In 1854 the Dyer brothers dammed the Brazos for a gristmill and later added a wool carder and a cotton gin. The town faded from the late 1870s as Whitney grew, a 1908 flood took the dam and the mill, and in 1951 the new Lake Whitney covered what was left. A marker on FM 1244 remembers it.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
