Todt Hill, the high ground of the Atlantic seaboard

At 401 feet this serpentine ridge is the highest natural point in New York City and the highest ground on the Atlantic coastal plain anywhere between Florida and Cape Cod. The rock is magnesium rich, which most plants cannot tolerate, so the hilltops were bare for centuries before the woods took hold. Todt is the German word for dead, usually explained by the Moravian burial ground opened at its foot in 1740.
