The Wiyot get Tuluwat back
2019
Humboldt Bay, California
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
In February 1860, while the Wiyot were mid-way through their World Renewal ceremony, settlers crossed to this island at night and killed the women, children and elders with axes and knives, coordinated with attacks on two other villages the same night. Bret Harte lost his newspaper job for reporting it plainly. Eureka returned the island to the Wiyot Tribe unconditionally in 2019, the first time an American city had given land back to a tribe with nothing asked in return.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
