Ed Temple coached the women's track team at a segregated state college on a cinder track, with no scholarships at first and a station wagon for travel, and sent forty athletes to the Olympics. Wilma Rudolph, who had worn a leg brace as a child after polio, won three golds at Rome in 1960 and insisted her Clarksville homecoming parade be integrated, the first such event in that town.
