The Shepherd of the Hills invents the Ozarks
1907
Branson, Missouri
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
Harold Bell Wright wrote a sentimental novel about hill people while camping on this ridge, and it sold in the millions. Readers came looking for the places in it, the locals began charging them, and Branson's whole industry, theatres, shows, coach parties, descends from a book. So, largely, does the American picture of the hillbilly.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
