A group of architects around Ralph Twitchell and the young Paul Rudolph worked out a modernism for the subtropics, flat roofs floating over glass walls, jalousie louvres, houses raised to catch the breeze, all before air conditioning made the problem go away. Perhaps seventy of the buildings survive, and it is the one regional modern movement America produced outside California.
