The sacking of Lawrence
Massachusetts Street, Lawrence, Kansas
On May 21, 1856 a posse of pro slavery men under Douglas County sheriff Samuel Jones rode into Lawrence, the town settlers from Massachusetts had founded to make Kansas a free state. They smashed the presses of its two free state newspapers, destroyed the Free State Hotel and burned Charles Robinson's house. Only one man died, one of the raiders, by accident. Days later John Brown answered with the killings at Pottawatomie Creek, and the fighting remembered as Bleeding Kansas was under way.
