The Pemberton Mill collapses and then burns

On the afternoon of 10 January 1860 the Pemberton Mill folded in on itself with hundreds of workers inside, most of them women and girls. Rescuers were still pulling people out of the rubble that night when a lamp set the wreckage alight and burned it where it lay. Somewhere between 88 and 145 died and 166 were carried out injured. It is still the worst industrial accident in Massachusetts history.
