On the night of 25 February 1643, Dutch soldiers sent by Director-General Willem Kieft attacked Lenape families who had camped at Pavonia on this shore after fleeing Mohawk raiders upriver. Around eighty were killed here and at Corlears Hook across the water. The killings started Kieft's War, which ran two years, emptied much of the settlement around the harbour and ended Kieft's career.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
