Curtiss Field opened here in 1929 and was briefly the busiest airfield on Long Island. On November 2 of that year twenty six women pilots met in a hangar and founded the Ninety-Nines, taking the name from the ninety nine charter members who signed on. Amelia Earhart was elected its first president two years later. The Depression closed the field in 1933, and in 1956 the Green Acres shopping centre opened on the ground the runways had used.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
