The National Black Political Convention meets in a Gary school gym
Gary, Indiana
![]()
Roughly 8,000 people packed the gymnasium of Gary's West Side High School from 10 to 12 March 1972, meeting in a school because the city had no hotel large enough to hold them. Delegates ranged from Black Panthers and nationalists to Republicans and Democrats, with Coretta Scott King, Jesse Jackson, Amiri Baraka, Bobby Seale and Betty Shabazz among them, and the convention issued the Gary Declaration. It was the largest independent Black political gathering in American history.
