The murder of Kitty Genovese and the bystander effect

Kitty Genovese, a 28 year old bar manager, was attacked and killed outside her Kew Gardens building in the early hours of March 13, 1964. Two weeks later the New York Times reported that 37 neighbours watched and none of them acted. Later investigation showed that claim was badly overstated: some heard, few understood what they were hearing, and at least one person did call. The reporting was wrong and it still changed psychology, giving researchers the bystander effect and the term Genovese syndrome.
