The King Range rises 4,000 feet straight out of the surf and defeated the highway engineers, who routed Highway 1 thirty miles inland instead. The result is the longest stretch of undeveloped coast in the lower forty-eight, a walk of about twenty-five miles where sections are passable only at low tide, with the tide table as the only schedule that matters.
