The last public execution in the United States
1936
Owensboro Convention Center, Owensboro, Kentucky
Rainey Bethea, convicted of the rape and murder of 70 year old Lishia Edwards, was hanged on a lot here on 14 August 1936, the last public execution in the United States. About 20,000 people came to watch. National coverage of the crowd, much of it exaggerated, pushed Kentucky to end public hangings in 1938. The spot is now the drop-off lane in front of the Owensboro Convention Center.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
